Schlegel, Morris sparkle

The Alma Airedales girls and boys track teams competed in the Leonard Daniel Relays this week.
The foursome of Owen McCoy, John Cump, Ayden Parker, and Landon Morris won the 800-meter relays with a time of 1:35.17. Crump finished second in the 110 hurdles (16.42) and fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
Morris was second (11.55) in the 100 meters. Parker was third (53.9) in the 400 and Josh Releford was third (2:16.65) in the 800.
Matthew Schlegel enjoyed a big day as well. He won the 300 (41.17) and was third (16.47) in the 110 hurdles.
Schlegel also anchored Alma’s first-place finish (3:40.53) in the 1600-meter relays along with Byron Standridge, Releford, and Parker.
Standridge finished third (23.64) in the 200; Morris was sixth in the same event.
Schlegel, Crump, Morris, and Standridge finished second (45.44) in the 400-meter relay event. McCoy, Samuel Haig, Jackson Rust, and Releford finished third (10:07.65) in the 3200 relays.
Also, Haig and Jackson finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800.
In the field events, Israel Towns-Robinson won the triple jump with a leap of 39-7. In the pole vault and long jump events, McCoy and Crump placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Alma junior Jackson Mitchell was third (43-11 ¼ ) in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Teammate Weston McCall was fourth in the discus and Noah Ingle was sixth in the shot put.
Alma’s Kenadie Farris won the high jump with a leap of 4-10. Gracie Erwin finished second (30-6) in the shot put, and Izabel Benson was third (80-0) in the discus.
Nevaeh Kangas placed second (2:63.93) in the 800 meters. Zoye Wofford finished third (1:07.01) in the 400 meters.
The Lady Airedales’ Vivian Beneux was third (13.91) in the 100 meters and sixth in the 200. Farris finished sixth in the same event.
BASEBALL
The Alma Airedales will head into next week trying to get back on track following this week’s doubleheader loss to Russellville.
Alma (8-9, 2-4) dropped both games by scores of 15-0 and 15-1. Brayden Driscoll accounted for Alma’s lone run with a home run.
Earlier in the week, Braden Green and Aiden Keith helped pitch the Airedales to an 8-3 win over Ozark, with Green earning his first victory of the season. Keith continued his strong season with 3 ⅓ innings of solid relief.
Keith has worked 4 ⅔ innings this season, allowing just two hits and no runs.
Junior Michael Taylor went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. The outfielder leads Alma with 24 hits and a .490 batting average. He also has four doubles, three home runs, and a team-high 16 RBIs.
Sophomore Easton Daily is hitting .364 for the Airedales with 16 hits and eight RBIs.
SOCCER
The Alma Airedales’ soccer teams dropped a pair of conference matches to Greenwood this week before responding with a split against Danville.
The Little John’s won the boys' match, 3-2.
The Airedales’ Julian Davila, with an assist from Dawsn Oliver, scored the first goal in the 20th minute. Elliot Resinos scored the second goal, with Maddoux Judkins adding an assist.
Lukas Todd and Eddie Tate split time at keeper, with Todd recording two first-half saves, and Tate recording three second-half saves.
Alma girls soccer coach Macy Ayulo’s squad earned a 2-0 win over Danville.
Addison Goodnoh put the Lady Airedales ahead with a goal in the 53rd minute. Lexi Julian, who set up the first goal, added a second goal in the 63rd minute.
Junior keeper Vivian Beneux earned the win with a pair of saves.
SOFTBALL
The Alma Lady Airedales’ softball team earned two victories last week at the River Valley Rumble in Van Buren. The Lady Airedales snapped a 23-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Maumelle. They also defeated Prairie Grove.
The Lady Airedales (2-14, 0-6) dropped a 5A-West doubleheader to Russellville on Tuesday and then suffered a 10-9 setback to Southside on Thursday.
Alma will host Van Buren on Tuesday.
GOLF
The 17th annual Citizens Bank Airedale Golf Classic will tee off June 1 at River Valley Golf, with all proceeds benefitting the Mikell McSpadden and Frank Vines Scholarship funds.
Over 17 years, the event has raised $38,500 and 38 students have been awarded scholarships via the event. Anyone interested in sponsoring a hole should contact Potts via email at jpotts@almasd.net.
