Wednesday, September 20, was an exciting day for our senior students as they got to experience College and Career Day. It was a big day full of opportunities and learning that started with a meeting with counselors to cover transcripts, college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid.
Students got to hear from special guests, including Captain James Wood from Fort Smith Fire Department, a video from Tanner Shelton with Arkansas Air Guard & Fayetteville Fire Department, and Theresa Baggett with Adult Education, who discussed the various classes and career opportunities they provide. Other attendees were Cole Douglas and Dustin Shively with Douglas Structural Welding and Ozark Welding Institute. Chloe Clifton, representing ATU Ozark, talked about their programs, and Jonathan Dean covered home building and contracting.
Ritchie Cagle with Westark Barber College presented along with AHS Alumni Demetrio Cerda, who is currently finishing the program. Joe Costiloe and Alvin Medlin represented the Air National Guard. The Arkansas Highway Police attended, with Joseph McCollum and Matt Young speaking on their behalf. Our very own Officer House also talked about law enforcement and being a school resource officer. Brett Peters with Hawkins-Weir Engineers spoke about his field of work, Brian Young talked about what it takes to be an electrician, and Kailyn Tyler, an AHS alumni, discussed the Physical Therapy Assistant profession. Alma High School student Caleb Downs was recognized with a celebration for making a 36 (perfect score) on his ACT! It is to our knowledge that this has never been accomplished before at Alma Schools - amazing!
Both breakfast and lunch were served to seniors with gift card drawings to keep it fun! They ended the afternoon with the College and Career Fair in Crabtree Gym, where they had the opportunity to meet and speak with representatives face to face. We are so excited for our seniors and the year ahead!
