Alma softball team rolls, 16-1

Have a day, Harper Jernigan. 

The Alma freshman pitcher allowed one run over three innings and drove in three runs with a pair of hits to power the Lady Airedales to a 16-1 win over the Huntsville Lady Eagles. 

Alma (3-3) opens 5A-West play Tuesday against Greenwood. 

Huntsville (1-6) has lost six straight and has been outscored 93-26 over that span. 

The Lady Airedales made quick work Monday, scoring seven times in the first inning and nine runs in the second. Jernigan doubled home two runs in the second to make it 9-1. Mackenzie Gwinn, who doubled home two runs in the first, drove in the 10th run on a grounder. Brooklyn Neighbors’ RBI double extended the lead to 11-1, and Laramie Carr’s bases-loaded walk made it 12-1. 

Peyton Morris was hit by a pitch to force home the 13th run, and Aurora Huff’s walk made it 14-1, and Morris scored the final run on a sacrifice fly. 

Morris scored three times. 

Baseball 

The Alma Airedales baseball team suffered a 5-4 loss to Greenwood in the 5A-West opener Monday. 

The Airedales’ long-awaited home opener was set for Tuesday. 

Senior Piercen Howell was the losing pitcher, allowing two runs in 5 ⅔ innings while striking out seven. 

Alma (3-5, 0-1) fell behind 3-0 after four innings before chipping way. Cash Wilson’s RBI single cut the deficit to one, and Alma rallied for three seventh-inning runs on Michael Taylor’s two-run double and Kyle Peters tied the game with a two-out RBI single. 

Howell got the first two outs in the Bulldogs’ seventh, but a walk and two singles gave Greenwood (5-2, 1-0) the victory.

Left-hander Austin Duerr supplied the offense and the defense in the Airedales’ 2-1 win over Morrilton. The big southpaw smacked a two-run homer and struck out nine and scattered five hits while throwing a complete-game victory in Alma’s victory.
