Alma girls blank Farmington

Alma Schools 

Yoesline Gonzalez accounted for the game’s lone goal during Thursday’s 1-0 win over Farmington in 5A-West play. 

Keepers Kali Wasson and Lauren Burdick combined for the shutout. The win snapped an 11-game conference losing skid, dating to March 26, 2024. A win over Greenwood this week would put Alma over the .500 mark in conference play for the first time since 2020. 

It was Alma’s first conference shutout since blanking Vilonia, 1-0, on April 14, 2022. 

Farmington won the boys' match, 2-1. 

Elliot Resinos accounted for Alma’s goal in the 26th minute. Junior keeper Lukas Todd had five saves. 

Alma will host Greenwood on Tuesday. 

Track 

Alma’s John Crump and Sam Schlegel both excelled at Thursday’s Quad City Relays in Van Buren. 

Crump won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.66; he was second (42.21) in the 300 hurdles. 

Schlegel won the 300 (41.04) and finished third (16.19) in the 110 hurdles. Both Schlegel and Crump helped lead Alma’s 800 relay team to a first-place finish of 1:33.60. The group included Owen McCoy and Ayden Parker. 

Parker won the 400 (53.67); McCoy was third (55.06). Alma’s Samuel Haig was sixth in the 800. 

In the field events, Weston McCall, Jackson Mitchell, and Dallas Stallings placed third, fourth, and fifth in the shot put. 

Mitchell and Demetrius Humphrey were fourth and fifth in the discus. 

In the girls’ division, Nevael Kangas won the 800 with a time of 2:37.60. Kenadie Farris won the high jump with a leap of 4-foot-10 and helped lead Alma’s 800 relay team to a first-place finish of 1:55.88.

The 800 squad included Ah Lea Henson, Zoye Wofford, and Vivian Beneux. Henson was second (4-8) in the high jump; Beneux and Farris finished fifth and sixth in the 100. Beneux was fifth in the 200, and Wofford fifth in the 400. 

Softball 

Elkins built an early 5-0 lead and coasted to an 8-3 nonconference victory over the Lady Airedales on Thursday. 

Brooklyn Neighbors suffered the loss, allowing six hits and six runs (only two earned). 

Alma committed a season-high seven errors. 

Freshmen Laramie Carr and Harper Jernigan each finished 1-for 2 with an RBI for the Lady Airedales. Cali Frazier went 2-for-3 at the plate. 

Alma returns home Monday to play Huntsville. 

Baseball 

The Alma Airedales baseball team suffered a 14-4 loss to Fayetteville on Thursday. 

Senior Brayden Driscoll was the losing pitcher. He also drove in two runs for the Airedales. 

Sophomore Brycen Lester drove in a run and scored a run for the Airedales (2-4).

Parker Edwards picked up his second victory of the season, and Destin Smith drove in two runs to help power Alma to a 6-5 win over Siloam Springs. Grant Shankle got the final out as the Airedales notched their fourth victory of the season.
