Alma drops match to Harrison

The Alma Lady Airedales’ volleyball team dropped a 25-23, 25-15, 25-14 decision to Harrison in 5A-West play. 

Such was the case two days earlier, Alma led throughout much of the first set and held an 18-15 lead in the opener. Alma had used a 7-1 run, which included kills from Zoe Thrift and Maggie Brogan, and aces from Miranda Gibson and Grace Peters, turning a 7-4 deficit into an 11-8 lead. 

But Harrison went back in front, 23-22 (it’s first lead since holding an 8-7 cushion early in the game), and after Alma tied the match at 23, the Goblins scored the final two points for the win. 

The second and third games would be different, however. 

Alma fell behind 16-7 in both sets, dropping Game 2 by a 25-15 count and falling 25-14 in the third set. 

Junior Mabrey Birchfield had 13 digs and continued to close in on 500 digs for her career. Zoe Thrift and Breella Hughes led the Airedales with six kills apiece. 

Maggie Brogan and Chloe Gregory had three kills each, and Julia Nutt finished with 20 assists. 

Gibson, Hughes, and Peters finished with two aces each. 

Football 

Trevor Hoover and Titus Benson scored two touchdowns apiece to power the Airedales to a 26-8 victory over the Farmington Cardinals Thursday. 

Hoover ran for a career-high 153 yards on just nine carries. Benton went for 92 yards on 11 carries. He also passed for 49 yards and had five tackles and an interception for the winners (3-1). 

Also for Alma, Payton Broadway had five solo tackles. Granger Brasuell and Callum Wood each had an interception. 

The Alma Airedales’ junior high team suffered a 34-14 loss to Farmington Thursday. 

Quarterback Chase Parker threw for 93 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Boaz Benson. Parker and Benson also finished with six and five tackles, respectively. 

Tristan and Colton Nutt each had five stops apiece. 

Volleyball 

The Alma Lady Airedales’ junior high team defeated Farmington Thursday at Crabtree Gym. 

Jaslyn Boone had 10 kills, dished out seven assists, had two aces, a dig, and assisted on a block in the team’s win over Farmington. 

Bailee Oliver had 13 digs and finished 1.7 in serve-receive. Anna Swarnes added three kills and five kills. She added an ace and finished 1.88 in serve-receive. 

Isabella Peters had four kills, 10 digs, and an ace; Matilyn Dunn led the team with 15 assists. She also had three aces, six digs, and one kill. 

Jaeda Cahoon had four aces, four digs, and a solo block, one kill, and two assists. Peyton Morris added four kills and hit .300. She added two digs and an assist.
