Alma’s Caden Farris is getting hot at the right time. Monday, he got some payback as well.

The singles player rolled to a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Greenwood’s Alex Schaefer Monday in 5A-West tennis action. Farris had earlier dropped a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) loss to the Bulldogs’ J.J. Acosta on Sept. 5.

Farris has won three of his last four matches.

The senior, who carries a strong academic record as well, hopes to attend college at NYU.

“I want to go to college in New York; I want to go to NYU, and it’s pretty competitive, so I know I just have to do as well as I can and take all the hardest classes,” Farris said. “I would say it (tough academic schedule) improves my mindset. It’s beneficial to try as hard as I can. My academic mindset probably helps with tennis, just because I’m a perfectionist.”

Farris is the product of a strong athletic family. His sister, Kenadie, plays with No. 1 doubles partner Marti Lineberry, and his brother Cash is a football player for the Airedales.

“I think it’s great,” he said. “My parents have pushed us hard, but in a good way, and the same goes for my siblings.”

Also for Alma Monday, Jackson McMurray and Joshua Smith defeated Greenwood’s Keaton Whisenhunt and Wesley Jarrell in a grueling 7-5, 4-6 (10-3) match.

The Airedales’ Colby Kimmons, the team’s No. 2 player, suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss to J.J. Acosta (Greenwood’s No. 1) in singles play. Both of the Airedales’ singles players, Charlotte Koller and Nora Medlock, dropped their singles matches.

Alma’s No. 1 doubles team of Kenadie Farris and Marti Lineberry dropped a tough 2-6, 6-4, (9-11) to Greenwood’s Maleah Cole and Emma Wirth.

Kensington Wadkins, whose doubles partner, Lacey Haughton was sick, played with Alexis Stowe Monday and dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Greenwood’s Harper Berg and Lydiah Belue.
