For much of the season, Alma’s used a big third quarter to help the team dig out of from a halftime deficit.
Friday against Russellville, the opposite happened.
After batting the Cyclones to an 18-18 standoff, Russellville outscored Alma, 21-11, in the third quarter. Game over?
Not so fast.
The Airedales opened the final quarter with an 8-0 run and, thanks to sophomore Camden Curd and freshman Easton Boggs’ big second half, rallied for a 54-46 victory for the team’s first conference victory of the season...
Curd scored 13 of his team-high 14 points in the second half. Boggs scored all 12 of his points in the final half.
“We’ve been down all year; we’ve played really good teams,” Curd said. “We knew what we had to do; we gave our best effort and hit the shots when we needed to.”
“We didn’t really change anything; we just got back together and we focused more,” sophomore Israel Towns-Robinson said. “We won the game.”
Alma sophomore Miles Kendrick added 11 points, including a key 3-pointer during the team’s fourth-quarter run, and finished with three rebounds. Sophomore Carmani Smith dished out five assists.
Senior Matthew Schlegel finished with six points. Alma also made 12-of-16 free-throw attempts.
Russellville 54, Alma 47
GIRLS — Russellville fell behind Alma by seven points with four minutes to play in Friday’s game.
But the Lady Cyclones were just about to get going. Russellville’s Brenna Burk scored 10 of her team-high 23 points in the final quarter as Russellville used a 17-4 run to secure a 54-47 win over the Lady Airedales.
Jordan Gramlich had a game-high 26 points for the Lady Airedales (5-10, 1-2).
Lydia Mann added 11 points for the Lady Airedales. Sophomore Daimya Parker dished out six assists.
